In Canada, there are two types of national checks: (1) CPIC (Canadian Police Information Check) and (2) Certified Criminal Record Check.

From what I have read, the CPIC is enough, provided it is properly notarized by all the necessary parties. It also takes about an hour to get at an agent in Canada.
The Certified Check can also be done at an agent, but goes through the RCMP, who then insist on mailing the form to your address. It only takes a day to do, but then you have to wait on the mail, which can take a while depending on where you live.

Any Canadians know for sure that the CPIC is sufficient?

I did the criminal check last summer in Toronto. All that was needed was a certificate from Toronto Police Services that went through the RCMP national registry. It basically said your name is not in their database therefore you have no criminal record. The cert was Tor police, not from RCMP. I was told any cert that is within 6 months is good.

I got it notarized and authenticated by Chinese Consulate in Tor which was accepted fine for the Z. I left early from my school due to family issues back home but that is a whole other blog . . .

Thanks. That's the CPIC, and that is what I thought (and the Internet seemed to indicate).

This speeds things up for me, though I will confirm it with my school, of course.

Were you able to confirm this with your school?

In my situation, someone with my name and birthday does have a criminal record. So I kind of get the sense I would need to submit fingerprints and do the RCMP check to show absolute proof.

I'll probably do them both to be on the safe side. Just curious what the final word was in your situation.

The CPIC was approved online by the local PSB or Z Visa issuing agency. Final approval of paper docs hasn't happened yet, though.
