We have friends coming to China from Cardiff and she will not have a Z visa. She has been told that tutoring privately, no contract, and being paid in cash is legal without a Z visa. I'm not so sure. Does anyone have anything to add? |

If your friend is coming to China with a tourist visa then it's not legal. Other types of visa, questionable and risky depending on circumstances. Who is the source of information for this friend? |

Absolutely not. It is illegal to take on any work without an appropriate visa. |

I'm firmly of the opinion that if you teach on a tourist L visa you are asking for trouble. But for all that I'm thinking of doing some privates while I'm there in July/August. My Chinese host says that she will arrange for a friend to get the bookings and handle the money. This keeps me at arms length from the transaction.
I don't know a lot about visas other than Z and L, but I think the others that could be used require a sponsor or invitation. |

The source of the sagacity is the International Department of the university that has hired her husband. They've also told her that she could work part-time online without any trouble. Again, I'm not so sure. |

Online - that's a thought. If the students are in China there wouldn't be any time zone issues.
If they were in say Thailand, the Chinese wouldn't have jurisdiction.
There are threads on online but I don't think a clear winner emerged. |
