I do... it’s just in the driveway of the house we’ll be retiring to by the sea Cool

On topic though, it was great to share the joy of the woman in the next cubicle to me who passed her test last week and got her driving license yesterday.

Liberation is surely not about giving everyone a driving licence and an automobile.

Well Scot... I suspect that there are significant number of women in KSA that totally disagree with you. I certainly do. When one has spent one's life in parts of the world - and especially my own country - where there is either very limited, too expensive, or non-existent mass transit - being able to drive a car of one's own IS all about liberation and freedom... not to mention the ability to get to school or work.

I prefer using Uber to driving, the roads are terrible for the nerves and I don't want to use what limited grey matter I have getting to places in one piece. I'll leave that to those who don't care about having very little mental capacity when outside of a car.

Let me see. What is wrong with this idea ?

Car dealers would say so. However, car ownership is one thing; being allowed to personally drive that vehicle is another.

This is about having equal rights and personal choice/free will. In this case, females (Saudi and expat) now have the right to drive in KSA, which puts them on equal footing with males. Obviously, there are limitations given the country's patriarchal culture as well as the dynamics in some expat families.

Freedom means that individuals are not being restricted in the things that they want to do. While 'total freedom' in a society may not be possible, or even desirable, certainly some places are freer than others and Saudi remains very much at the lower end of that spectrum.

Nonetheless, if a woman wants to drive and, they're not allowed to based on their gender, then, in this regard, they're obviously less free than males who do have that choice. Nobody is saying that the lifting of this ban is everything, but it is something. Also, let's not forget, greater mobility means greater independence and, personally, I see this as pretty significant and a long-overdue step in the right direction.

Well the next step in liberation should be that any Saudi woman should damn well be able to drive down to Dubai without anyone's permission. And then have the same freedoms as any Jumeirah Jane.
