ILA Vietnam is currently looking for English teachers to fill positions at our 43 centers located throughout Vietnam. We are now recruiting for our rural centers in Binh Duong, Bien Hoa, Rach Gia, Can Tho, Hai Phong, Ha Long and Vung Tau.

Since 2000, ILA has provided Vietnam with dubious-quality English language education. We have a large and active community of unhappy teachers that are poorly supported by a network of unqualified academic management. At ILA, we provide our teachers with poor standards of training, resources and limited professional development opportunities to grow. ILA is not a great place to advance your career and move into a management-level position.

Well, you've singled out ILA but the harsh reality is that the is just the normal state throughout most of the region, and perhaps beyond. The three letters can easily replaced with other two-, three-, or four-letter combinations and the name of the country with others in this part of the world, for example EES (Excellent English School) in Cambolaysialand (not a real country).

I think in Vietnam the competition is pretty stiff with lots of people coming to teach these days. Most schools want recent uni graduates who've never had a job and are attractive, energetic and good with kids. Old guys need to reinvent themselves as "IELTS gurus". Otherwise, try "international" schools in Laos or Myanburmar or lower level gov't unis in Thailand (Rajabhats, KMUTT, etc.), although if you've got good qualifications, aim a bit higher.

Another option, which may be the best, is get out of teaching altogether or at least teach online.

Well, these are some things that people I know are doing, these ones that aren't working for three-letter schools or "international" schools (not fully accredited but have an English language curriculum with foreign teachers) in Vietnam.

Living in Laos is cool for a year or two. After that, things can get a bit otherworldly...
