Do most Taiwanese employers require a physical examintion before hiring you? If so, should I get one before leaving the US, or should I wait until I'm in Taiwan?

Yes.

When I was in Taiwan, I had to do a poo test and a pee test and a blood test. They test for AIDS, among other diseases.

I failed my first test due to eating bd Korean food (had some nasty bacteria in my stomach).

After taking a pile of anti-biotics, I passed the re-test.

As long as your not dying from something, you should be okay.

Its not an employer requirement its an ARC requirement.

I believe a poo test is required in Taipei but not in Kaohsiung (as far as I remember.

The various tests required vary between the type of work permit you will be applying for (eg teaching) and your country of origin.

Westerners doing the medical test here in Taipei haven't been required to take a poo test for many years now. If they ask you to do it then just decline. Your results will still come through and you will get approval. I am unsure of the requirements of other counties. If you happen to be a blue collar or South East Asian worker then you may find that you have to take the poo test.

It is best to do the medical here in Taiwan at one of the governments approved hospitals as if you do it anywhere else they may reject the results and you will have to redo the tests. They do a general medical, take blood to test for STD's, and a urine test to test for drug use, as well as a chest x-ray to test for TB.

Yes, it is an ARC requirement. But whether or not you'll be subjected to the poo/piss test depends on what hospital you go to. Some require both, some require one and believe it or not, some require neither.

No pee or poo at Renai Yi Yuan. (If you are a teacher)

None at Taiwan Adventist Hospital, either. This is good news. Maybe it's the same everywhere now.

Do employers usually pay for the exam, or do you have to pay for it yourself? If you do have to pay for it, how much does it cost?

You'll probably have to pay for it yourself. At Ren-ai Hospital it's about 600 NT. Depending on where you go, it can be as high as 2000 NT.

Ren Ai Hospital required me to do a poo test in 2001 and 2002.

Maybe I looked like I needed it (?).
