I understand that most of the country has a problem with air pollution. I would like to avoid the worst of them and live in a—relatively-clean—city. My asthma could be triggered by dirty air. I have been offered a position in Zhengzhou but this seems to be among the worst:

Thanks for any advice on finding a livable city.

I lived in Anyang a year ago and the pollution was hideous. When I took the train to Zhengzhou it was just as bad.
The photo in the link below comes somewhat close to just how awful it was.

Avoid all of Henan.

Shenzhen wasn't too bad. A few off days, but mostly great.

The whole area around Zhengzhou is bad. That whole set of provinces are stagnant. I taught a few months in Bozhou in Anhui province for 'Talent Way'. The pollution was hideous non stop, no end in sight. Actually you want to avoid ' Talent Way ' as well, they were just as bad as the pollution.

Indeed, all of Henan seems very bad:

I decided to decline the position. Thanks for the useful replies.

Try south west, south and south east of China. Almost everywhere else is toxic and/or freezing cold.

OP, check this site out for real-time AQI measurements

https://aqicn.org/map/china/

Type in the city you want to work in and see the data.

Thanks for this: is that a measurement for right now, today? Wouldn't a recent year's average be a better indicator? Thanks.

I think some of the best areas are around or in Beijing and Shanghai, believe it or not.

Why talk about it when you can look at a realtime map? https://waqi.info

Beijing no longer ranks among the 100 worst cities. Zhengzhou still looks pretty bad.

Many western countries also have pollution. China is working hard to keep the environment fresh.

I know, I hate that my hometown hits 20 as the high aqi.

Jokes aside, the truth is that China has been making great progress in battling the issue. Industrializing a country this large is crazy. One big problem is the number of people (with cars). Though, car exhaust is not one of the main contributors to the pollution. More trees and other vegetation does have a huge impact on cleaning up the air. Something many Western urban centers could learn from China.

The west can learn a lot from China - about so many different things they do better - managing the environment is not one of them.

I guess you could feel that way. I grew up in a rural area with good air quality, but there was still a weekly burn your trash day. Imagine if that happened in China Shocked

I have been here 11 years and can say there is a very consistent and productive effort to curb the pollution levels. I am not shilling when I say that, no knife to the back or anything. The government seems to take the issue seriously. Managing the environment in general, well, maybe not much to learn, managing pollution levels in major urban areas, there is something to learn.

Yes, pollution levels in urban centers of China are much higher than Western nations. It is population. If the Chinese gov stepped away from the issue the whole world would see no sun again. Instead, thankfully, they do actually make a huge impact in decreasing the levels of pollution.

OK, it does seem like I am shilling for China, but what I want to get to is there is an issue and it is being proactively addressed. I am a witness to that and so are many of the other posters who used to be around.
