Has anybody heard of jobs such as $US20 000.00 paid for English teaching work in China. - Through the Chinese in embassy in other country?
Just wondering as it seems so strange - out of place in China - for just a basic teaching job - not director or anything - and the person doing it had 0 experience and just a few week TESOL thing.

On April 26, 2004, I discovered on our great sponsor's website (wow!) an ad from the so-called Anglo-Chinese Management Ltd, which was offering teaching jobs at VERY high rates of pay for China. I calculated that they were the equivalent of between 16,700 and 24,700 RMB per calendar month. One had to apply to the so-called "Northern Consortium" of English universities, based at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). They were looking especially for people with experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP), though there was one teaching category that did not require such experience. They wanted no less than three letters of recommendation from all prospective candidates.

Hope this answers your question, Person!

Yeah, I have heard about that Consortium.

When you think about the about of money the Chinese pay (x 3) for their overseas studies in Britain, the salaries being offered is appropriate for the type and standard of work expected by the Consortium. What do you think?

I think they want British people only, is this the case?

I doubt it - the web site in question says that "interviews [for teaching jobs in China] take place in Manchester [England], China and Australia", so I imagine that native-speakers from any anglophone country are also eligible.

The web site address is http://www.northern-consortium.ac.uk but you can also go through an internet search engine like Google and type in "Northern Consortium UMIST" in the subject box. You should find all the info and downloadable application forms there.

I am sure any anglophone can apply, but they will have the pick of the century from among the most dedicated and academically improved applicants.
I know someone who makes U.S.$ 4000 a month in China, but he is not teaching oral English; few people could nudge him out of his job.
I also know a Shanghai school that pays RMB 25'000 a month; again, jobs are given to SUITABLE candidates, not necessarily those who apply for the money.
Then the American School in Guangzhou pays quite well too; however, backpackers need not apply!
