The Federal Trade Commission announced today that it was settling a complaint filed against the University of Phoenix, one of the largest for-profit colleges in the country. The University of Phoenix and its parent company, Apollo Education Group, agreed to pay $191 million for using deceptive advertising to recruit students. The school is one of the largest in the country and enrolls over 100,000 students.
The complaint alleged that the companies misled students by using advertising to give the false impression they worked with major companies, such as Twitter and Microsoft, to place students in employment. According to the FTC, the companies also misrepresented that they worked with prominent companies to develop curriculum. The FTC’s complaint alleged the companies used these as marketing strategies to recruit students to enroll.
