I came to Taiwan with the hope of learning a lot of Mandarin so that I could pursue opportunities in translation, possibly on the mainland.

I don't regret my decision to go with traditional Chinese characters. They are really beautiful.

However, I'm not learning a great deal of Mandarin and the fact that Taiwanese employers seem to be picked from the lowest one percent of the moral bell curve bothers me.

Most Taiwanese people seem to be very nice and moral. But it's the one percent of evil people who go into language school ownership.

I didn't consider the choice of studying Mandarin on the mainland very long. All the jobs I could see on the mainland seemed to pay almost nothing.

I also have observed that several teachers who got their start in Taiwan moved to the mainland.

So I would like to ask: is the mainland economically developed enough to tempt experienced teachers who are used to Taiwan salaries? Does anyone on this board have experience with colleagues who started teaching in Taiwan but who moved to the mainland? Does anyone have experience working in both places?

Thanks.
