I'm a teacher coming to Taiwan with only about US$700.00. I want to know what the cheapest or most inexpensive route is to go, how to find a teaching job the quickest, and if whether or not customs will let me in on an outbound ticket to Hong Kong instead of a round trip ticket back to the states. Also, will schools there be willing to take someone with a tourist visa and be able to sponsor me so that I don't get into trouble?

for an outbound ticket: anywhere is fine. doesn't have to be your home country.

I always thought that 'on the lam' was a phrase used to describe someone running away from a crime they'd committed. I'm not sure if there's an extradition treaty between Taiwan and the US. Probably not.

As long as you have a visa, a school should have no trouble sponsoring you. A 30-day stamp at the airport won't cut it. You'll have to leave the country.

As for finding a job, it seems the quickest way is tealit. If you're not particular about working conditions or pay, you should be able to find a job within a week. If you have a more specific idea about what you're looking for, then it could take considerably longer.

Well, 'on the lam' in this case just means quickly. I assure you I've committed no crime. No dictionary present, sorry.

It also means I'll just be entering on a tourist visa. Yes, I do have an onward ticket to Hong Kong. I'm wondering if someone would hire me, then have me go to Hong Kong and get my work permit. This is all I meant.

But I need to know how I can find the cheapest place to stay and a place looking for teachers ASAP. Otherwise, I'll really have to be 'on the lam,' if you know what I mean.

There are some hostels around Taipei main station. You can stay there until you find a job. As for places looking for teachers ASAP, there are always schools looking for teachers ASAP. It is easy to get a job within a week though the conditions may not be ideal.

Hey, thanks a lot Wood. Do you know how much they go for per night and if they have any English speaking information desks to assist tourists? This sounds like a stupid question but I'd just like to make sure before I get there.

Hostels: there's Taipei Hostel on a lane off Linsen N. Rd and Happy Family 2 off Zhongshan N. Rd. Both have websites and if you search for these names you'll find the addresses and rates.

If $700 is all you're bringing, then you should take the first job you get, no matter how shitty, so you can start earning to pay for the whole work permit/ARC process.
