Would you all please share some of the red flags to watch out for when dealing with contracts?

For example, I responded to an ad under one company name and the contract sent to me via email had the name of another company on it which had nothing to do with the name of the school that I was supposed to teach at. I am a bit confused. I asked for references and got one who said that his experience was really great.

There has to be a better way to go about all of this except to just cross one's fingers and hope for the best.
