Hello,
I am in the process of arranging a job in China through an agency called teachcn.com. I am wondering if anyone has worked with this recruiter and if they are reliable and keep their word. Their terms seem to be decent and everything checks out with the contract sticky. I guess I'm a little concerned because I'm wondering if the recruiting agency is promising all of these things (6500Y/mo., RT airfare, FT Apt., 2500Y Trav. Sti. ) , if the actual school is going to honor it all. I don't mind so much that they're subcontracting me and taking a cut, because their offer for 16.5 hrs. of actual teaching is actually quite reasonable (considering that they have stated that there are no split shifts, night hours, or weekends). I've heard some bad things about recruiters in general and want to know about this one in particular. Also I've become a bit wary of people who reply to posted resumes on this site as it attracts a lot of obviously seedy recruiters and virus uploaders (though this particular one so far has seemed honest and forthcoming). Any advice or information from people who have approached or worked through this recruitment agency? |

I do not know anything of this recruitment 'agency' (read, 'web-based mail address'), though I do know something of China and the TEFL scene there.
First, the '16.5' hours a week of 'actual teaching' will no doubt actually equate to 22 or 24 'actual teaching' hours. I suspect the 16.5 figure refers to 'academic' hours (or some other similar term). There is invariably some clause somewhere that makes a distinction between two wholly separate 'types' of 'hour'. Second, 16.5 hours a week simply sounds too good to be true for 6,500 RMB a month (plus airfare, etc.); are you sure this post is not for a (relatively) expensive city such as Shenzhen? If so, you may well find it more beneficial to be situated in a smaller, less well-known city on, say, 4,000 RMB a month. Third, I would be very, very wary of the 'no split shifts, night hours, or weekends' claim. Why should anyone offer that when they simply do not have to? Fourth, what other duties and responsibilities does the post entail on your part? That is, even if the '16.5' on-the-dot figure is accurate (highly unlikely), will you be expected, or perhaps even contracted, to stay on school premises to 'plan' and 'create resources', or will you be able to 'go exploring'? I am afraid to say that I doubt very much that it will be the latter. In China, such 'non-teaching' duties often actually result in giving lessons in some form or another - usually by stealth, they term such lessons 'English corners', or 'placement interviews', or some other bland, all-encompassing term.
I hope it works out for you but from where I am - quite some distance away at present - it stinks to high heaven and I would not touch it with a barge pole. When something appears too good to be true, it invariably is. This seems like a fairly standard scam just to get you - or anyone currently breathing, for that matter - in on the ground as quickly as possible. |

I don't think it is too good to be true. I got 6,000 RMB just by asking. I have an incredibly nice apartment with everything that was promised. My contract calls for teaching 20 hours per week, but I only teach 10. If you like the job, take it! Come into China on a multiple entry Z visa. |

what are you rabbitting on about ludwig? 6,500 for 16.5 hrs in shenzhen is not too good to be true. don't be ridiculous. jesus, you'd advise someone to take 4000 for 24 hours in some grey-throwback-to -the-70's town over that? not that shenzhen is all that pretty but at least youre on the spot there. last time i worked in that area i was getting 8 for 18 and didnt even have to show up for 2 of them. snap out of it. |
