or they are fresh out of uni, new on the scene, got a 'B' on the CELTA and their trainer offered them a job and they are under the impression that 30 hours contact at �9.50 an hour in small cramped classrooms with multilingual and mixed level/ability students is a good deal.
Who told them this?

I've been ticking along nicely at around 20 grand gross or under for the past couple of years. I have a decent lifestyle with a couple of holidays abroad this year, a flat and I even managed to bid successfully for the Holy Grail at an auction in Chiswick recently.

Possibly one of those statements is the product of a diseased mind but it's up to you which. I'm off out of the UK soon for as long as possible but 20 19500 gross will see you right.

I'm teaching in London because I'm doing a degree here (Open University). Once that's over I'll be out of here, to somewhere Spanish speaking. Thinking about Miami, actually...

Yes - Miami is nice, if you like a Hispanic environment (no one speaks English there!).

However, unless you have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, you will not be allowed to work there.

Even ghost - Canadian citizen - cannot work in the States, and the paper work to apply is tough. You have to prove that no U.S. citizen can do the job. Good luck, but it's a long shot.

Thanks - but as it happens I work for a Very Large Company indeed - one with schools all over the world. You might even call it the McDonald's of English Language Teaching One of the advantages of working for these people is that they can pull strings, transfer teachers and arrange visas .

I like (what I've seen of) hispanic culture so far, and I've heard so much about this USA place it would be interesting to check it out for real. And my respective school in Miami has a swimming pool - the London branch has ping-pong...
