Rabies kills more people a year in China than any other infectious disease.
Only one in six dogs in Shanghai has been vaccinated[source: Shanghai TV News]. Imagine what that figure is like in the provinces .
There were no statistics available for monkeys, rats, etc. |

I had rabies shots once when I went to do voluntary work in India in 1990. The vaccinations covered you for something like 8 years or so back then (not sure now) but there were three and you had to have them something like two weeks apart and then six months apart for the 2nd and 3rd. It was a bit complex.
it was also a bit pricey as the NHS in the UK didn't cover it. |

You still have to have the gut shots if you are bitten by a rabid dog (or a Bindair Dundat), so they do seem fairly pointless.
Apparently, the pre-death hallucinations are really vivid, so there is some consolation! |

I was bitten by a dog in Thailand in November and took the rabies series. The shots are given in your arm and are no more painful than any other shot. You get 2 shots when you are bitten, one in each arm; 2 more 3 days later; 2 more a week later; 1 shot a month later; and 1 shot 3 months later. If you are bitten, take the series: rabies is a terrible death. |
