Someone a long time ago suggested dilute vinegar to clean tatamai. Unfortunately, my local supermarkets only have the import stuff that is more expensive than hen's teeth. So what is a cheap substitute for that when you want to clean tatami? |

I was probably the one who recommended vinegar, through this article.

Can't imagine imported vinegar! All I can say is try another supermarket and pay the 200 yen.
By the way, if you have non-stick pans that have lost their capability to be non-stick, you can use vinegar to restore it, at least temporarily. Pour it in and cover the whole surface, bring it to a boil (have your oven fan running at this time), and after about 10 seconds of seeing bubbles form throughout the liquid, stop. Wash the pan as usual, and you are back in business. I bring this up only because not many people find a use for vinegar in cooking, and this technique makes use of it. |

There`s cheap vinegar here... you probably just keep walking past it. It`s in glass bottles and looks yellowish. Ask a teller for 0-su. (Just in case you buy mirin.) It`s probably near the shoyu/yuzu-pon.
It took me about 6 months to find mayonnaise... I guess I couldn`t deal with the soft plastic bottles! |
