Hi there,
I'm rather new on the whole EFL business, and it looks like I will be working in Wuhan from september. Just wanted to chat to some of you who are there, and maybe meet them when I get there! So any info on Wuhan, would be great also as i haven't signed a contract yet, what sort of salary should I try to negociate in this particular province?
Thanx a lot,
Babino |

I'm an old Wuhan hand, since I have been in this city for just over 3 1/2 years. You may like to peruse some of my old posts using the "Search" facility if you want to know about the city. You can always PM me if you want further information.

Sounds familiar to me! Are you going to teach at Wuchang Experimental Primary School? I was there for a year, and it was a great experience teaching the kids there, I can tell you. If you are going there, I'm sure that you'll enjoy the experience. You can always PM me if you want some further details and information. |

Hi
We are from the UK. I speak reasonable French and was hoping to teach a little of it. I would love to have a chance to use it. There is a French Alliance Francaise at Wuhan University and they do French evenings etc. so maybe we can cach up when you arrive. |

Hi, Orangiey, sorry for not getting back to you earlier, but I had three solid hours of class between 6 and 9 p.m.!
Anyway, I am unaware of the term "boarding school" as regards the Wuchang Experimental Primary School, but I do know that there is a branch school located some six kilometres away from the main school site. I suggest that you PM ContemporaryDog because he is my ex-colleague at the school and he is much more familiar with what goes on at the branch school than I. He has already completed two years at the school and is staying on for a third! He himself is married and his wife is expecting. (Aaaah! ) They both live in a double room at the teachers' dormitory on the main site, so they would undoubtedly be able to fill you in properly as to accommodation.
The Alliance Francaise de Wuhan is located in the Ba Yi Lu just near the Dong Hu (i.e., the East Lake), one of Wuhan's most popular attractions. If you want to go there from the primary school, you should get a bus from the Peng Liu Yang Lu to the Jiedaokou bus stop in the Wuluo Lu (e.g., the 804) and then get the 608 bus to the last stop, which is almost directly opposite the Alliance - you won't be able to miss it. I am not an active member myself but I have been there. I once asked about taking a course, and they told me that my level of French was far too advanced!
Nevertheless, it is possible to engage in a Cercle francais on a Tuesday night and in a film night on a Thursday night (or is it the other way around?), and there are no fees for participating in them. You can check out their website by doing a Google Search (because I can't remember the address at the minute). I plan to get myself involved in the Alliance from September onwards assuming that I have the time, since I will be moving to the south side of Wuchang near my current school.
So, you never know, we might meet sometime. Bonne chance! |

I taught in Wuhan a few years back and it is still my transportation hub to reach other destinations in central China. I go through and stop overnight at least 5 times a year.
Next monday I will arrive by train in Wuhan and then fly to Shanghai.
What I am saying is that I always seem to come back to Wuhan. I really like it even though it was described to me, by a Hong Kong Chinese in Hong Kong, as the industrial armpit of China.

Roger has not lived and worked in Wuhan for more than 3 1/2 years, has he? I think not!
SillySally, you can enjoy Wuhan to your heart's content with or without anyone's blessing! |

SS, congratulations on your attempt to fill in everyone in on the relative merits of Urumqi.
But the best "teaching environment"?
This is just not true. There are 2 Mills in Coal Capital. Neither worth working at, unless one is a masochist. The Unis. may or may not be that bad, but the pay is incredibly low.
There is a pent up demand to get more language schools opened in Urumqi, but the ability to hire FTs is controlled by the authorities, and they're not easing up. |
