Actually, I have been thinking over what Migo said, regarding almost everyone having been abused at some point of his/her childhood, and it would seem, depending on our definition of course, that this could well be true. So my apologies there Migo. I hope you will accept it. I was ungracious in my replies to you.
This of course begs the question of what abuse actually is. How would one quantify or qualify it? For me, it would have to be something that would set it apart from normally selfish/self protective/jealous blah blah behaviour, that one would be expected to encounter in the general course of ones daily life. This is not a very good definition, so no need to correct me on that Ludwig.
Something struck me as ridiculous a few weeks ago. A school was being accused of cruelty to its students because there was a situation where the students were made to stand outside in 8-10 degree weather.
I was made to run cross country runs in sleet and snow, for the glory of the school!! How could the HK students possible be thought to have suffered cruel or unusual punishment?
Anyway, this would be an interesting discussion to have. It would be nice if we could do it without being abusive to each other-- as a bonus. |

The problem with that definition is that something that's considered to be normal in day to day life can be abuse. I'd say something which is unnecessary that causes harm to a person is abuse. In some cases it might be justified to an extent (ie spanking a child because you can't figure out a better way to explain to them that they'll get killed if they play on the road) but it's still abuse as there are better solutions. The person inflicting the abuse might not have known any better but it would still be abuse.

Are these students used to such weather and what clothes were they wearing, and more importantly why was it being done? I can shrug off anything down to -20 in shorts and sandals as long as there's no wind chill, but I'm not exactly normal in that aspect. I know quite a few people for whom it would be very cruel to force them to be outside in what I would think is almost luke warm weather.

Well it depends, were you conditioned to do runs like that? If you were then you'd actually be better off because they were standing still which means they couldn't stay warm, if you're moving then you're staying warm and you can handle the weather better. It's like this, if one person can handle running cross country in sleet and snow then it's not abuse, they can do it and they'll be fine. However, if someone is barely able to do cross country running in temperate weather, then it would certainly be abuse as there's no good reason to require someone who can't run well in the first place to run in adverse conditions.

I can deal with that. |
