i went there once. but i don't think there's too much life there. it's far from the mainland, you know, it's an island. but you gotta love the weather there. i guess, hainan province is just an ideal place to escape for freezing winter and if you love the beach, go south and you'll love Sanya. Summer is hot. |

Just wanted to let you know that I've sent a message that should help you get in contact with a couple people on the Island.

Haikou is pretty ugly and crowded. It's a port town and a transit hub for people coming from the mainland en route to the touristy South around SANYA.
Haikou has been modernised rather fast over the last ten years, and it does have modern shopping and housing; but the island is compaaratively backward and poor, so few natives can afford to live the good life that mainlanders demand.
It's also rather humid and hot year round though a breeze from the sea will make life more bearable. Personally, I like the interior and the South best, but there are few jobs there. |

is a nice school. FAO with decent English skills. feels a bit like a sorta dirty Hawaii. palm trees with cement ponds and the usual plastic garbage. went there for a long weekend and a presentation. treated well. but after 5 days I had "island fever" so went back to a university on the mainland. Sanya was a bit blah! no one swims - water looked pretty horrid when we were there. Holiday Inn on the beach has a pool. and the 5-star prices to go with it. |

Crowded, grumby, town; yet with some modernization so you can get those western thingies you may like. Hainan is also near many beaches although the real beaches are a good bus ride from there.

Hi -- I've lived in Hainan since 1993. It's wonderful if you like the tropical island atmosphere.

Thanks Eddie
That is great - but do you think anyone will take the bait at RMB3,500 per month?

If you are a native English speaking teacher with experience, I'm sure there is a post waiting for you. Hainan is wonderful in many ways but not as developed as the larger cities of CHina. If you like the rural atmosphere, you will like Hainan. By the way, Haikou city now has KFC, McDonalds and a couple of Pizza places. Some like to know, others don't care. --- Eddie, Ieea www.ieea-china.org www.hainan.motime.com |
