What are your personal and professional goals for the new year?

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately. I've decided there will be no "resolutions" for me this year, just goal-setting. My goals for 2006 are:

Personal - work out more, get a better apartment, learn to play bridge (have just started), get better at pool, visit friends more often (just bought a car), try more recipes, take a class in a foreign language, take one vacation out of the country.

Professional - begin studying for my Master's in Applied Linguistics, apply for a coordinator position in my department, conduct a workshop at a local conference.

Et tu?

T'is the time of year for reflection, no?

My personal goals are to put more effort into practising the saxophone and to be less of a doormat.

Professional goals...to get back to basics and start writing more.

Personal:

1) most of them would be censored, but they mainly involve the divorcees I bump into in my local salsa club.
2) Organise a charity football tournament and rock gig in benefit of disabled sports.
3) Write a short story about my great uncle who was taken prisoner by the Nazis in France in 1940 when part of the 51st Highland Division and eventually ended up in a camp on the eastern German/ Polish border working (so I am led to believe) in a salt mine. (Learn some basic Polish and visit Poland to this end).

Professional:

1) crack on with the modules in the M. Ed. I am doing.
2) keep on adapting the curriculum in my subject area to permit greater access for disabled pupils.
3) get a couple of notches up the enhanced pay scale- I've just bought a flat and need the money.

All of the above ( and maybe 1 or 2 others) are do- able if I maintain focus and self- discipline.

I have the same resolution every year: to be a better person than the year before. Personally and professionally. Difficult to measure it, though!

Professional: Learn more Japanese. Publish more. Get a job by April.

Personal: Learn more Japanese. Get a job by April. Work towards publishing something. Figure out what I want to do with my life before I retire and/or die.

Personal

Complete my upcoming three-week detox and teach myself to like the taste of (disgusting) vegetables like brussel sprouts

Volunteer with an organization that works with immigrants when I return to Canada (as my experience as an immigrant in Italy has been so appallingly horrible and difficult)

Professional

Transfer the skills I learned while teaching EFL to my B.Ed in Language Arts Teaching program

Not roll my eyes at the people in my university seminars

Quit my current job tactfully and with diplomacy so as to get an excellent letter of reference
