It depends completely on what school. I would expect that each school would set its own rules.

Probably the only school which may pay at least partially in US$ would be Cairo American College in Ma'adi.

Sorry Alien, but I really have no idea what K-12 schools are paying, but I am sure that the range is wide. With certification and a few years of experience, a foreign hire teacher could easily make that level at CAC. But, my suspicion is that there are few places that pay that high.

Hopefully someone may come on with more related experience. Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of posters on this board are in tertiary education. And most people are on the road now and not at computers. So, you are stuck with me and my rather unhelpful answers. Sad (ma'alish)

One question - are you a native speaker? Really annoying I know, but from your posts, you don't appear to be, and I have to warn you that salaries for native and non-native speakers vary dramatically.
I work for a language school in Alex, and the majority of the non-native teachers are on salaries of around 500LE per month!!!! And many of them have additional jobs because of this. My salary is considerably better, but nowhere near approaching what you stated. I earn approximately 1000LE per month from the school, and I then have lots of other jobs on top of that.
Hope that info helps a bit... (Sorry if it was a bit of a downer...)

I don't know anything about Alex, but in Cairo I've seen salaries from 3000 LE /month to more than double that for native speakers with a few years experience and a tesol cert. They usually provide housing for single teachers (shared with another teacher) and give an allowance for married ones. You can also usually get a round trip ticket home for summer vacations.

As for pounds or dollars, it varies greatly depending on the school. Usually the higher paying schools will also be willing to pay at least a portion of the income in dollars.

Hope this helps

Alien - the only reason I earn such a pitiful wage is because I work for some friends of mine, and they have only just set up a company, therefore they can't actually afford to pay much more right now!!!
But actually, my wage, although pathetic by western standards, is very reasonable for Egypt. For example, Amideast (which is one of the main employers for foreign teachers) is not paying a whole load more.

But, despite the fact that the wage sounds bad, it is EASILY good enough to live comfotably on. I am even managing to save a certain amount of money, despite paying rent, transportation, eating out on a regular basis, etc.

Also, bear in mind that my wage is basically for part-time, and if I work overtime, I can earn a whole load more. I work 12 hours basic time, and I can easily double that each week, especially since this time includes admin and general office stuff (like proofreading) so I actually have a particuarily good/easy life...

Plus, I'm also working at a couple of other places, and therefore, my general wage each month is about 3000LE, when you add everything in together!!!! Shame I don't get any perks - flights, accommodation or anything like that, but I have such a good working environment, I'm happy to put up with a few things!!!

For those that may not know Egyptian Pounds, that would be about US$322 at today's 'official' exchange rate. When I was last living there in 2001, my rent was 2000 pounds.

I have my rent for 1500 a month in the harum furnished and everything! My husband is teaching at the American college and he is making 4000 a month so, that is how we are surviving. Also, if you are making pounds you should try not to buy alot of american and european products because it gets really expensive, try using products made in egypt! Just a tip!

My rent is 1000, shared with my housemate. So I still get nearly 1500 to myslef (after all my overtime is paid!!)
Out of interest, what's the going rate for private lessons? I've heard figures quoted anywhere from 30LE to 120LE!!!!! I generally charge between 40 and 60... Is that about right?
Alien - how's the search going? Update us!!

30-120 is exactly right. The reason for the huge spread is that, unfortunately, its usually done on a sliding scale. Teachers usually charge the maximum that they think their students (or more often their students' parents) can afford.
