Is Guanxi University a Freudian slip? I visited the campus of Guangxi University several years ago and found it quite pleasant. Nanning does lie a bit off the beaten track, but that could be a virtue.

I taught there in the summer of 1990; maybe that was too long ago to give a relevant reply. However, it was a very large, very beautiful campus located at the edge of town. The FAO there at that time was very helpful. They've got a long history of dealing with foreign teachers, so that has to be a plus for them. Nanning is the capital of this very poor province, but I understand that it has become quite "developed" lately, whatever that may mean. You would be near Guilin and Yangshou. Yangshou is a must-visit place, not as well advertised as Guilin, but we like it much better! It has to be one of the most beautiful places in China.

Good luck,
Carole in Hangzhou

Hi Peter,

I work at a middle school in Qinzhou, about 130 k's south of Nanning. True, Guangxi is relatively poor from an economic standpoint, but exceptionally rich from a cultural perspective. Their are only five foreigners in Qinzhou, a 'small' town of 1 million and all teach at the No. 2 Middle School. I have only been in Guangxi for 6 weeks but have travelled to many regions in the south of the province. The lack of western influence, beautiful scenery and as already posted, the close proximity to Guilin and Yangshuo make Nanning a good option. Watch out for a bad cold though!
