Hi, can anyone living in Hokkaido give some advice please. I'll be cycling and camping around the island next week for a month. I was wondering if I should bring warmer clothes for the evening. Also I presume that I need my sleeping bag? I plan to go up to Wakkainai and back down to Sapporo and Hakodate. Really lookijng forward to the national parks. Thanks.

I've done the Hokkaido thing a few times in the summer.

Two years ago, in August, I started from Wakkanai and worked my down to Hakodate in 11 days!

The first night about 60 km south of Wakkanai it was so cold so I slept in a building housing vending machines.

Be sure to buy food in Wakkanai too as in that same stretch of road the pickings were slim!

On a positive note there are few cars, even in the summer, and the barren landscape (no tress by the ocean) is actually quite beautiful!

You'll definitely need some warmer clothing and that sleeping bag up north.

Around Sapporo it wasn't too cold! But be prepared!

This year I'm doing Aomori to Nigata, if I get that far!

Go to Yahoo!, call up the Weather link, and type in a Hokkaido city. I'm in Sapporo, and this is what I get. You can see 5 days in advance, or click on a 6-10 day extended forecast. You can even get temps in C or F. Basically, it's been hot and humid here, around 70F at night for a low, and 85-90F for a daily high.

Thanks to all for the insider on weather conditions in the north. I hope to travel that way in the near future. I've been to Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada visiting friends and let me tell you, that's the worst I've seen it when it comes to a deep chill.
