I'll finish my master's in linguistics (emphasis in teaching ESL) in December after which I plan to teach abroad. So where's my best bet to go teach?
I've got four years experience teaching ESL and I want to make sure that wherever I teach I can get a higher quality job with my degree as well better pay (at least slightly better pay...I'm realistic). I know this isn't the highest paid profession and that teaching conditions vary greatly, but I want to make sure that I feel compensated for having a higher degree. I taught abroad with a certificate for a couple of years and had a blast, but I'm hoping I can find work at a university this time. Any advice from those in the know?

Thanks

ps - yes, i know the money's great there, but i've kinda ruled out the middle east.

You don't want to hear it, but UAE is a good place, so I hear.

Japan is also a possibility in a university. However, they usually look for publications and Japanese language ability as a requirement.

You might want to check out ITESM in Mexico. I have a masters and I teach at the Toluca campus.

3 publications are needed on average for full time positions but Japanese ability is preferred but not essential. Most universities do not demand Japanese ability from part-timers as they are not required to attend meetings or keep office hours for students.

Getting jobs here is also about connections and who you know, as well as what pieces of paper you have. Teaching experience is looked on favorably as well.
