Does anyone have any information on what kind of taxes are implemented through the WHV. Also, has anyone heard of private schools not proving taxes to the government. This may seem like a very sceptical question but I believe many private schools scim the government this way when hiring WHV employees. ??? [/b] |

Yep, I know of 2 schools who only charge 5% tax for WHV teachers. Of course, then those teachers don't officially work there, but they don't seem to mind. |

WHV holders are supposed to be charged 20% with holding tax.
When they finish their employment this is meant to be recalculated by *the employer* and a refund issued.
In normal circumstances you *should* get it *all* back as you aren't supposed to be earning enough to qualify for paying *any* taxes.
Good luck finding *any* employer that actually follows the rules though.
At best, expect to pay the minimum 5% or have money refunded back to this level.
You can, in theory, although I've never met anyone that's actually managed it, get a refund issued at Narita as you leave Japan or even after you've left Japan by applying to the Tax Authorities through a local Japanese consular office. It'd not doubt be easier to get an employer to do it properly for you by insisting on the refund when you leave them.
And yes, there are employers that scam WHV people out of money. My first employer in Japan did it to me before I knew any better way back when. |
