I recently heard that in Japan it's illegal for schools to hire Americans while they are in Japan. Anyone know anything about it? |

Hire them as hitmen, you are probably right.
(be more specific, how is the American there, under what visa, qualifications, etc...) |

Sorry. To be more specific: to come into Japan on a tourist visa, find some work then leave and come back under a work visa. Possible? I read all the sticky posts/FAQs, but would like to hear from someone who has done it. I must escape the rut that is known as....Korea. |

Not exactly. It is illegal for you to be hunting for work in Japan on a tourist visa. It is not illegal for a company to HIRE you while on a working visa.
That is also the case regardless of your nationality... Has nothing to do with being American.
In fact, if you do so much as even HINT at airport immigration that you might be there to look for work, you may find yourself in unpleasant circumstances.
Once a company has agreed to hire you, you may legally stay in Japan (without starting your job) until your paperwork goes through for a visa status change. |

You might have added that despite this fact, it has been and remains a very common standard way for many foreigners to find legal work in Japan. |
