Yangshuo: Only the weird Buckland School is likely to hire you, and then they might post you to somewhere else.
Dali (I guess you mean the Dali in Yunnan): Never heard of expats working there! Work in Kunming and spend your holidays in Dali and Lijiang!
Yunnan is too poor to be able to afford expats! |

You are right although my experience is a bit dated as I travelled there many years ago. It took us 8 hours by bus, for 400 kms; later a railway was rumoured to be under construction (and should have been completed years ago). Unfortunately, I have not been updated on latest developments.
However, you simply won't find a job in the area, much as I regret this myself. If you want to be close to Yangshuo but not be in the hands of Owen of Buckland school fame, try Guilin, which has a number of reputable universities and colleges.
The trip by bus between Guilin and Yangshuo takes about one hour and a half. |

Roger is right, there is a railway operating now between Kunming and Dali (that now seems very old!) Also, the bus service is exceptional by Chinese standards. Over the last holiday I took an overnight train to Dali from Kunming then got on a bus and was in Lijiang by noon (a 3 hour bus trip plus a 1 hour rest stop). I also agree that it would be nearly impossible to find work there. There are already so many laowai there that jobs are probably in the hands of long time residents or hired out by the hour to travelers. I've looked and never seen any offers for either city, although I did see a few notices for small jobs posted in the cafes. Kunming would definitely be the place to at least get started, and it would put you at the hub of the province so that you could easily check out other locales in the area. |

Kunming to Dali is 5 hours by express bus and costs RMB 100 each way. The road is excellent.
You are unlikely to find work, except private lessons, in Dali Old Town. You may well find work in Xiaguan which is the non-tourist Dali, a bus ride out of the Old Town.
Why don't you subscribe (free) to http://members.expatsinkunming.info and send an email to the bulletin (published every Friday) asking if anyone knows of any school addresses in Xiaguan? |
