My wife and I have received a job offer/contract from a school in Weifang (well, Shouguang Century School) they offer 6,300 rmb per month each, kindergarten service for our daughter as needed, 18 hours teaching a week, no office hours. Lesson planning and teaching style is completely up to us. However they supply no teaching materials at all - i.e. books and materials to teach (card etc for flashcards) appear to be at the expense of the FT. Is this normal and the next question I guess is are materials like card, books, props for games expensive in China. This would be our first posting. 2 apartment rooms are provided gratis on campus. Are 11.00pm curfews normal and are they strictly imposed? we're not partyers (we have a 4 year old) - just seems a bit archaic to the western mind. Does this seem a decent offer?. Anybody know Shouguang, nice place? Would appreciate any input and thoughts on things we may have not clarified with the school that we need to clarify. Cheers. |

What exactly does it say about this "curfew" in your contract? I wouldn't worry about it, whatever it is it's ostensibly for your own safety. Chinese are a bit over the top with the "dangers" out there. 11:00pm is when gate guards usually close (but not always lock) the school gate. Our gate closes at the same time but that's never stopped anyone from strolling in anytime between 11 and 6 the following morning no questions asked. Anyway, whatever it says in the contract, just inquire about it to be sure and kindly inform whoever that a curfew is unnecessary.
Materials: use the internet. |

apparently you can photocopy handouts, you get charged and you pass on charges to the students (good luck with that I have been told) same with text books. Seems they use multimedia in each classroom and expect students to copy (say, a crossword) to their books. seems clunky. |
