Anyone knows the best places in Japan to go surfing or participating in other water sports? |

You may hear from others that Okinawa would be the hot spot for surfing in Japan but believe me, the only surfing conditions available through out the year is during a typhoon. Definately not for the timid at heart... |

I'm currently on a 1-month surf holiday in Aichi pref. The peninsula (Irago -- Long Beach) is where all the resin monkeys go during the summer. Right now they're running the Tahara Pro comp. till the end of the week.
I've also surfed Izu (peninsula) -- the best is down by Shimoda, and I was in Shonan (up the coast from there) a few weeks ago.
Chiba also has decent action (well, as far as Japan goes anyway). I've got some friends who live up there... (They're full-time surfers... Nice job to have, huh?)
The general consenus is this: waves are small, crumble, uneven, mostly shore breaks, and the longboarders get the most action... I also body board, so if I get frustrated with the surf (or lack thereof) I go tea-baggin'
If you want/need any details, PM me and I'll try my best to answer.
I've never surfed Okinawa -- I'm not that rich. I'm lucky if I can load the boards and my wife into the van and go 3 hours out to have some fun....
Sorry I don't have much detail about other watersports.... I know there's some sailboarding , jetskiing and wakeboarding going on near where I am now, but I've never tried either of them.
Cheers,

Shikoku, specifically Kochi is generally held to be the best place for surf in Japan. |
