HI all!
This is my first post-Yay
I'm graduating in 2 weeks (BA-International Studies) and have decided what I really want to do is teach in China for a year. I've lived abroad before and have a little teaching background, but I have a few questions I'm hoping some of you all will give me some input on:
-I'm hoping to go over in January-is it very feasable to obtain a year contract for a year beginning then?
-I'm only beginning to learn about China and not certain where I'd like to be-I don't need a huge city, but appreciate the city atmosphere and would like to be able to travel a bit, making the East sound like a better option-anyone have any favorites?
-What is the best way to try to attain a position? I've been reading through all of the posts here and it seems like going directly through a school is the best way, but what's the best way to determine it's legitimacy?
If anyone has any input, it'd be much appreciated!

Any where which has a Macdonalds is a good bet Check Let's Go or Lonely Planet. Pick a city with a franchise and you'll be ok.

Legitimacy? Not sure what you mean? The only legitimate schools are those which are registered to hire foreigners....and they can range from universities to mom and pop shoestring ops. Private schools like Modern English and EF are franchises and appear legit at first...until you meet the franchisee.
Your best bet is a university. Hundreds of websites exist with job listings. Do a google. |

And check the sticky at the top of the forum page for websites; it has a very long list of employment websites.
As for legitimacy, a few people I've heard from indicate that 2 references from current teachers at the school in question is the best way. This may not always be realistic in obtaining but in a city atmosphere it should be provided. Thumbs up from them usually indicate that *you* as a newbie (to China that is-) will survive. Then you can re-evaluate your options.
NOTE: This is also coming from a newbie, so please use the search function to slog through the overwhelming amount of material school reviews, hints, tips, and occasional inspirations.[/quote] |
