Hi there,
I have just finished teaching a year in Kaohsiung (interesting expirence) and am now back in Canada. Before I left I verbally agreed to a contract with a new school. Didn't sign a contract or anything. I plan to get a visitors visa to get back into the country. However I don't have a round trip ticket back to Canada. Does anybody know if I'll have any problems getting into the country with such a ticket.
Much appreciate all replys,
Cheers.

To enter Taiwan on a visitor visa (60 days), you must apply ahead of time in Canada. At the visa office you must produce a round-trip ticket showing plans to return to Canada within 60 days. Many people purchase this ticket and get a refund later. This is the BEST way to do it. Otherwise you'll only get 30 days at the airport, and you'll need to show a round-trip ticket anyway, and pay a higher processing fee. It'll be a big hassle after an almost 24-hour flight. Do yourself a favor and plan ahead.

Yeah, you'll need an 'outward-bound' ticket to come to Taiwan on a visitor visa.

You can buy a one way ticket to Taiwan with an open ended outbound ticket to Hong Kong or Manila saving a considerable amount of money. Also good to have in the very likely event of an unexpected visa run.
Good luck and welcome back,
A.

I heard that you can have an "onward" ticket so this can be open ended then? It doesn't have to have the exact date of your visa expiry?

What about coming back into Taiwan? I.e. say I have an onward ticket to Hong Kong... I get my visa extension in Hong Kong... to get this, or to get back into Taiwan to I need ANOTHER ticket saying I'm leaving Taiwan at some point or going back to Hong Kong at some point?

Thanks!!

A lot of people will tell you that they didn't have an outbound ticket when they entered. It's hit and miss, usually they miss you on this rule when passing through immigration.
However during the missile crisis a few years back it was nearly impossible to book a ticket on an outbound flight. If you have an outbound ticket you have a safety net. It also will give a little more confidence when dealing with unscrupulous employers.
Good luck,
A.
