Something hit me while browsing through the general topics discussion board and since I'm in China, I decided to post it here.

"Be as honest with yourself as much as you want to be honest with whomever."

For those of us who are already here, we know what does and doesn't go down here in China. So in business terms, we usually don't see much of a reason to jump to embrace this quotation because it involves a lot of clarity of thought associated with relationships as opposed to generally calm interactions that you know the meaning of inside and out.

This little quotation, if embraced from the onset, will allow you to base actions on things that will result in less direct harm to yourself (in whatever way(s)). You have to be able to admit that there's going to be mud in your relationship pool with a number of school administrations here in China, although not all. Prudence is key, both on your way in as much as it is on your way out.

As for the ladies, I'd like to read your interpretation of my previous sentence about prudence linked with men (in general)....

I was trying to get at the idea of not falling into denial about Chinese behaviour, especially when things go sour. Also, there is still altruism in that. I mention that specifically because I've met some who stupidly refuse to acknowledge that their boss might not be as forthright as they'd like with ending things and to respond in a more self-preservatory manner.

In short, feel free to restrict information so as to protect your end while still remaining truthful in your endeavours at work by continuing to teach and being sincere about leaving when you drop the bomb (i.e. tell them you're leaving).

As for males being prudent or not, there have been many threads discussing sexual differences (to keep it broad) and I'm just curious as to the level of prudence women think men have (or witness them having) as well as any other thoughts on the subject.
