|
|
Hey all got a few questions. I just got back from a month in Jogyakarta and East Java, and after at least a year of thinking about it, I think Im ready to take the plunge and make a career change into the EFL field. I have quite a few friends in Yogya and would like to make this my first choice if i cant find a position there then I'd probaly look towards Solo, Semarang, and then I guess the Surabaya area. I'd like to stay away from the Jakarta area if at all possible. I guess my question is what are my chances of finding a position in Yogya? Is it about the same as any of the other places? I saw while i was there that they have of course EF, I saw a ILP franchise down by the galleria mall as well as Real English and i think i saw a place called ELTI. Also it should be said I have no prior experience and no BA, but i plan on attending Transworld Schools in San Fransisco and getting my certification there. Heard anything good on them? if they do as they claim it seems like a decent place to get ur certification but id appreciate any info anyone could share with me on this.

I've heard bad things about the EF in Yogya, so be careful.... Check out what other schools are around. |

Did you make the move to Yogya?
Last I heard they still had the lowest salaries, at less than Rp3.5 million. |

This is a late reply, but I've been away for a few weeks. Call it jam karet!
In my opinion, the comments made about EF in Yogya have been fair and factual. The EF chain in that part of the world (Solo,Semarang and Yogya) are all owned by the one guy. He didn't want to be the Direcotr, but he was landed with the job. Now he wants to make money out of the venture.
The schools are all severely underpaid and poorly resourced. Yogya had mostly second hand material when I was there, including computers.
I know of a teacher with years of experience who returned there, and was put back on base pay.
There is another expat-run school in Yogya, mostly ex-teachers from EF Yogya. Competition is stiff, as there are many who value the town, its people and the local interests more than they do the money. The Director likes to take advantage of that, so the decision is yours.
It's probably one of the most friendly big towns in Java. You just have to learn to live with the touts or avoid the central city. Walking down the main street is something to be avoided anyway. |

And besides RE and EF is there any other schools in Yogya that employ native speakers???? As far as the trouts go my girlfriend (she attends UGM) shes like a lil pitbull and doesnt let them bother me As my plans stand now I start Transworld Schools TESOL Certification program on Jan 4th and my first teaching practice is 2 weeks from tommorow lil nervous about that but I assume Ill get there in the end any suggestions on anything is appreciated though |

Hope you do get a decent job in Indo. I love Indonesia, some people hate it and the people but not me. I get a buzz from just being here. I'm a bit of a sicko though, coz I like Jakarta. The seething mass of humanity and the madness of it all never fails to put a stupid grin on my face! And the people are a good laugh too - once you learn the lingo. |
