Hi there
I'm a 26 yr old well travelled Aussie girl and I've just recently finished a TESOL course. I'm not looking to head abroad till next year I had a few questions I wanted to ask now if anyone can answer them.
I'm thinking of heading to Okinawa to teach (maybe Nagasaki) - is there anyone who is teachng there at the mo that would like to get in touch with me. I'm choosing there because I'm a sunshine baby and I've done a few winters in my travels and I just dont think I could handle a winter on the northern islands. What is the weather like in these 2 areas compared to the rest of Japan?
I do of course need to take into consideration cost of living in Okinawa, can anyone give me any details on living costs, earning potentials, quality of life etc in this area or perhaps Nagasaki?
Lastly, I'm also hoping to teach little kids, preferably under 10. Is there anyone teaching this age group that would like to give me a insight as to a normal day/week with them.
Thanking you all in advance for any responses and information you may give.
BIG GRIN

I'm not an expert on either area but I can say I've never seen a job posting for Okinawa and I've heard that most jobs are taken by spouses of military. Do a search..I kind of remember a recent thread about working in Okinawa.
As for Nagasaki, two of my recent co-workers came from working there and they said the job market has been slowly drying up, but that was only their opinion. You could always get a job with one of the big chains and request Nagasaki. Or keep your eyes open and get lucky. Right now there is a basic eikaiwa job in Nagasaki posted on the job board.
As for kids, unless you are hired by a kindergarten or pre-school (or for example a conversation school just for kids like Peppy's Kids Club) most eikaiwas teach at least half kids. I've heard negative and positive about Peppy's but they do have schools everywhere and they only teach kids so maybe check them out.
Good luck!

The teaching market for Nagasaki is not great. and downright grim for Okinawa. If you have your heart set on either perhaps the JET Program is the way to go. At least you'll have the opportunity to occassionally teach at elementary schools. Otherwise, perhaps you could find a job at a kindergarten. Good luck in your search. |
