I'm currently negotiating with a school who has no experience hiring foreign English teachers. I'm already in Turkey and know salaries for foreign teachers are around 1.4 billion a month at 25-26 hours a week. How much would an hourly rate be? If I got salary what would be the maximum number of hours and how are hours over 25 generally paid? I'll be working in 3 month stints because I'll have to renew my vısa every 3 months so an hourly wage makes sense in that case. But they said if they are arranging a flat for me they want a quarantee of a years' work. I'm in the Bursa area. Any info appreciated. Thanks

Negotiate. Whatever they offer you ask for more. At my current place of work I managed to get an extra %33 on top of the original offer. The same goes for privates- think of what you think is a fair price and stick to it- unless you realise that they are richer than you first thought. This happened to me a couple of weeks ago when the chauffer of the student picked me up in a Rolls Royce. I suddenly became more expensive.

Hmmm, now I'm wondering, am I getting ripped off? I've been working kind of when-they-need-me part time at a dershane in Bakırky, and it's not my main source of income, but I'm getting 12 million per classroom hour. I'd been getting about 13 at my previous school last year, so that pay cut was a minimal trade-off for work that is way easier. They start all new foreign teachers at 12 million, then they get raises at the end of a year. The highest paid teacher is getting 15 mil/hr, and he's been there 4 years or so. Also, their guaranteed salary works so that you get your minimum hours whether they have enough classes for you or not, and you get paid for all the hours over the minimum at the end of every month.

I've been there a year, but with inflation, 12 million is becoming less and less of a reason to get out of bed on a Saturday morning, but I assumed it was average.

So I'm wondering-- for those of you working mainly with adults in private dershanes in Istanbul, what's your hourly pay? If anything I can use this info as leverage when I start angling for a raise... Thanks!
