I'm trying to figure out what I would like to do. I would love to teach ESL full-time, but I see that there is a bigger need (market) here in Atlanta for middle school, elementary, or high school teachers of other subjects. I know that I could get a nice salary and benefits for teaching non-ESL courses in public schools. So, I thought about getting a certification in ESL and earning my M.A. in Education. I'm not too sure of how I feel about teaching young children or teens in public school but I thought I'd give it a try.
My dream is to travel and teach abroad, but I have this house! I'm not sure if I want to sell it. So here's another question. Do those of you who have homes, rent them out? Do you live in apartments? If I sold this house and taught ESL abroad, I don't think I would be able to afford another house! Get my drift? I thought about teaching public school, saving like mad, paying off the house in several years and doing what I like. Do you all have these worries?

I've never owned a home before. They're $3-400,000 CDN where I am from. I know many people who rent their homes out when they live overseas. No one will ever treat your house like you do, so beware. There are property managers you can hire who will keep an eye on your place and collect the rent cheques. If you were to be overseas for a couple years that would be OK, but if it was longer, I'd say sell it. You would be saving yourself a lot of headaches.
Don't teach a group of kids if you don't know if you would like them. Try volunteering in schools first if you are unsure. I know people who have gone for an education degree and after their first year of teaching, hated it and quit the profession altogether. What a waste of time and money IMO. |
