Is a college degree needed in Taiwan? Or is being blond haired/blue eyed with a TEFL enough? How long are the visas good for?

For a residency permit, yes, you need a degree and a diploma to prove it, and they'll make you take some medical tests too. In lower end schools you might be able to get an under the table job where you work, do a visa run, work, do a visa run, work, etc., but that can get costly and annoying. I got a multiple entry visa before I entered Taiwan which was good for 60 day visits, and could be extended twice for a maximum of 180 days before you had to leave the country.

When I was there you could "enroll" in Chinese lessons to satisfy the requirement to have your visa extended a couple times before you had to leave. Not sure if this is still possible. There was no obligation to actual attend the classes. It was a complete scam, but it worked. I've also heard of people buying "degrees" from places such as KSR in Thailand. Not sure if they would work or if the authorities check.

I'm not recommending any of these options, mind you, but these are the scenarios I was familiar with when I was there...
