|
|
Hi everyone
An experienced teacher, I am about to start looking for work in Spain.
I have spent some time in Barcelona, but not met many teachers there, I was wondering, is there a central hang out or some kind of universal meeting point?
Valencia: Are there any teachers in Valencia? I went to visit a friend living there and really liked this place, but I didn't see much sign of an EFL market. If there is anyone out there teaching either for a school or privately in Valencia, then I would really like to hear from you!

There are some teachers in Valencia. Me and others. If you came to Valencia in August you would have seen very few signs of life. As far as I know there is only one school open in August and that is Berlitz. There are about 80-90 schools in and around Valencia, there is also the languages campus of the university and the Official Languages School so there is a lot of potential for private students.
You will need to apply for jobs early in September as by the end most schools have all the teachers they need and it can be very difficult to find work as I discovered last year.
If you need anything else let me know.

Thanks Ian
Its interesting. I didn't really look much but you make it sound like a whole underworld. But it there are that many schools then I guess most of the teachers are locals?
Another question I would have is, how does one apply for these jobs? I haven't seen many Valencia vacancies or schools online, is it a door-knocking application system?
Thanks for your help

There are a few non-native teachers but most that I have come across are native.
The only way I know of to apply for the jobs is a door-knocking process. If you plan it right you can cover the large and most of the medium sized companies quite quickly as they are mainly in small clusters rather than spead out.

80-90 schools in and around Valencia?? Wow!
I'm looking to move to Madrid simply because it has the biggest tefl market, however I'm discouraged by the cost of renting accommodation.
I never realised there were so many schools in Valencia tho..
Is Valencia an economical option? What is the average monthly rent? |

Hi,
You can still find good deals in Madrid, but you'll have to move out of the city centre. Which is not a problem since the city has perhaps the best public transportation system I've ever seen (including night buses).
Valencia is a nice place, and cheaper than Madrid (though not by much), but Madrid is still the better place to go, for work |

I love Valencia. Great little city. The beaches aren't as great as Barcelona (although Valencia does have them (with a time-consuming subway ride to them). But the center of Valencia packs quite a nice little punch particularly in the night. |
