If you are thinking about Indonesia there's plenty of jobs. There's lots of jobs at language schools that pay about 4- 10 million rupiah a month. these are advertised a lot on eslcafe.com and tefl.com.
There's a few jobs going at national plus schools. about $1300 - $3000 a month plus accom. There's ads in the jakarta post and with agents overseas.
Don't know about the international schools bu the pay is very high.
It's not too bad here. People are friendly and the culture is very interesting. I reckon it's a pretty good place to start teaching! |

Hi,
Why is it that so many post are based on school salaries? There is more to teaching than just getting paid.
I think that most teachers that are TEACHERS realize they didnt get into the profession to be rich and make money. There is far more than that.
There are many dabbers, and I think that it is those that express monetary values.
If you teach, be a teacher. |

hagakuri has a good point.Money should not be the most important thing BUT the fact is that in this profession it is not always easy to get a comfortable salary. In Japan you don't really need to worry. In other countries it's more of an issue. For the vast majority of efl teachers I am sure it's not the reason they entered the profession, but money will continue to be a major consideration for any job whether in efl or not. |

If you teach to travel then money isn't a prime motivator. I agree that it's the teaching and the school that's the most important thing. If you have a wife and kids and you're in ESL for the long haul as a profession then you seriously need to think about the renumeration. |

If Teaching is an excuse for an extended vacation, after studying for a Degree or a TEFL, money should not be too much of a consideration.
However, if you are in the Teaching Profession, for more than a break from "Home." Like any other profession, the idea of Salary, Vacations,
Sick Pay, and other perks are a major consideration.
Imagine, if you like the Country, and stay on or Decide to get married, and have children. You need a home, a job and wont be backpacking,
unless its vacation time.
Perhaps its age. But the majority of people I meet Backpacking or travelling are just following a new Trend, and have a simplistic idea of the places they visit. Once they work in a Country, they discover the real reality is the locals work and have similar ideals to folks back home.
I have met very few local people, who match or even act like the flaky backpackers ideal of a local. Except the local hangers on, selling drugs or
making money on cheap backpacker tours.
So dont insult us, with your stupid generalations that Teaching English, is an easy form of travelling, and not a job. |

With all due respect, I disagree with your statement. All of the people I know in EFL do care about the money they make and send a good portion of it home to pay off debts that htey have. Money is very important.
If money is not important to you, I would never criticize you for that.
However, there are people I know that actually would criticize you for your opinion re money. But I understand where you're coming from.

No - none of the EFL teachers I have known over the years expect to get rich. But many of them do realize that it is important to plan financially for their futures. Why is that so wrong?

You presume that teachers don't care about money. You couldn't be more misinformed. I have seen teacher's unions back in Canada go on and on about money and raises in their publicized battles with governments. Just because you're a teacher doesn't mean you don't value money.
It's fine to come to Japan or Taiwan and want to make money. That doesn't mean that you are not teaching good lessons, does it?
Also, think about this...most of the schools that we work in are not really "schools" but businesses and the students not really "students" but customers.
In many respects this whole business is exactly that, business and it's all about money.
Yrs.

All of your arguments for or against teaching as a way of making money are valid. In Canada for instance, you have to teach for at least 6 years before you're making a fairly decent salary. We didn't spend all of our money and time in school training to become teachers, all in the effort to "not" make a good salary. I think you all have to keep in mind, that some of us do have debts to pay and making money is important, no matter how the "other guy" looks at it. I for one, fit this category. I enjoy teaching and I am a teacher but I still need the money. I don't have parents or anyone for that matter, looking out for my interests. If it (money) wasn't important, then why even worry about how much the remuneration is? Just go to another country, travel around and enjoy the view. If you've found another way to do this without money, please share it with the rest of us. |

If you are after a list of national plus schools and their adresses try http://www.expat.or.id/orgs/plusschools.html
my suggestion is to email them personally, if you are qualified and experienced. There seems to be a shortage at the moment. |

check out the link. if it is fair dinkum it's a pretty good job offer!
Rp. 25.000.000/ month salary! |
I tried to contact this organization requesting more information, but got no response. My guess is that it is a scam along the lines of the "Beware ESL Asia" since it sounds too good to be true so it probably is. If it were real they would at least list a phone number since they claim it's urgent. Awas! |

A brand new school with 25 full-time teaching positions!!? I don't think so, somehow. Goodness knows what the scam is, but I'd bet any money there is one. |

It's a scam.. I'm sorry i posted this. I've since been told that it is a scam by reliable sources.
Sorry for misinformation. There are lots of good jobs, though.
I've got typhoid once again and i'm desperate to go back home to get better. Thus i'm passing up any good offer here. |
