I presume that we're talking about the Tong Hu located on An1 Yuan3 Lu4, a block away from the Jade Buddha Temple in Putuo District.
Mixed feelings about them at the moment because I've been talking with them about a job. Things are not progressing as well as I would like them to--primarily because of language difficulties.
They claim to be able to place you in "key" middle schools (zhong1 xue2) in Shanghai and the suburbs. The deal is that you work for Tong Hu and they farm you out to the schools.
One of the most worrisome things is that they say the first contract a new teacher signs with them is always for one semester. This does create a disturbing picture of the possibility of being left high and dry.
I've had some contact with a New Zealander--can't think of his name off the top of my head--who functions as their director of foreign teachers or somesuch. He's pleasant and articulate, but I'm not sure how much clout he has with the ownership. Unfortunately, he's in N.Z. on vacation at the moment.
I, too, would like to know more about this outfit. |

For what it's worth, this outfit also goes under the name of Yuzhen Group. |

I know an Australian couple who worked for them. They had a great experience. The company isn't without its eccentricities but that's why this is Shanghai and not New York.
Let me outline the advantages and disadvantages based on their experiences.
Advantages
Legal visa
Paid the correct amount on time, every time
Lots of help with accommodation or any other problems
Disadvantages
Some schools were great and some were less than great
It can be an isolating expereince because you are not permanently based in any one school. You will have to make an effort develop a social network.
You must buy your own medical insurance.
Overall, in the great scheme of things in China, you could do much worse. It depends on the type of experience you are seeking. |

A useful analysis! The disadvantages would appear minimal if you've already planted yourself in Shanghai--you already have your network, and, what the hey, the working environment of any school can turn sour overnight. |

Shanghai London Institute is a different outfit!
They are located near Jing An Temple metro station.
