It's such a difficult question to answer; seriously.
You need to look at the total salary package being offered, and then assess what benefits within the pakage are important to you.
As an example, last term my salary was 6,200 RMB per month. This term I have accepted a position paying only 5,000 RMB per month.
This term, I have:-
A computer, printer and 24/7 internet access in my apartment
Free electricity, gas, water & drinking water
30 days paid sick leave (which I'll never use)
1 month paid holiday in February
2 months 1/2 pay holiday in July & August (equal to 1 month)
English language TV (albeit CCTV 9)
A 1 hour bus ride from a major city (last term a 3 hour bus ride)
So, this term I am being paid less, but for me the 'extras' are more important.
Also, be very careful about the location you chose. Boredom can drive you nuts! |

What kind of school do you expect to be employed at? Training centre, public school, kindergarten? Extremely variable pay scales!
Location is another factor. |

Check out the China off topic section, there's usually lots of bitching on there about salary & location. Will give you a good idea regarding the balance between being well paid & being happy here in China.

There are so many variations in China it's hard to say, but in an average city, I would calculate all the salary and benefits, including housing and airfare, over the duration of your contract, then divide by the number of hours you expect to work over the duration of the contract. It should be around 100 yuan an hour. If it's much less, there ought to be some intangible benefit, like great students or wonderful location. If it's more, and the city is not especially expensive, then it's probably an OK deal.
There are some nominally foreign run programs which will ask for the CELTA and pay a bit more than average, but they tend to hire people already here. |
