Does anyone have any personal experiences of living and working in Hebei province? The Lonely Planet does not have all that much about Hebei but what it does have is not all that damning. I am eager to know if Hebei is a good place to live and work and if there are any places in particular to be avoided.

Hebei is like the hinterland of Peking and Tianjin, so most natives get attracted to the national capital or to the port city of Tianjin because that's where the money and the fun are.
I personally feel Shanhaiguan is a nice place as is Qinhuangdao, not to forget Chengde. Tangshan is the biggest place after Shijiazhuang - but it is an ugly urban sprawl, mostly because it was rebuilt after China's most terrible earthquake this century in 1976. Shijiazhuang is big, ugly and boring.
In the end, your need to be employed may sway your decision! Go for Tianjin, and explore Hebei from there!
