Hi,
I have a degree in linguistics, and have completed all the coursework for a TEFL (don't have the actual cert... it's a long story!). I have taught English in the U.S., and in Mexico. I also have loads of experience as a pre-kindergarten teacher here in the States, and I speak some basic Japanese. So, I don't want to sell myself short. Given that I am pretty well qualified, would I be better off to apply to one of the Corporate English factories like GEOS ECC and AEON? Or should I go check out private schools in person? I'd be grateful to hear any thoughts and advice you have about which is likely to be the better deal in terms of work conditions, money, support, etc.
Also, if I decide to job hunt in person, how much money do I need to save before I come, and what time of year is best?
Thanks in advance!
Natalie

You sound quite over-qualified for any eikaiwa (conversation school), even the Big Four. You would probably be bored silly and frustrated beyond belief with trying to use their teaching methods, too.

I would suggest looking at international schools.

or perhaps mainstream schools (although they would probably want people with at least a little teaching experience in Japan).

Be prepared to come here with about US$4000 in hand to support yourself for a couple of months. Write to me for more information on this if you like. I can explain the differences between job hunting in Japan vs. from abroad and give you a breakdown of expenses with some files I created. [email protected]

Mainstream schools and international schools begin their school terms in April. So, start your job search about 6 months early. You can do some of it from your home country, but if you want to come here, come in late February or March.
