Hi everyone. My wife and I are exploring the possibility of going to Spain to teach. We would be taking our courses in Canada (and yes, it is the best country in the world for all you doubters!) in September and October and hopefully be in Spain by November. We would be looking to teach or tutor until May because we want to travel the rest of Europe, before coming back to Canada in mid-July.
My question is -- are there short-term jobs available in November and is tutoring a viable alternative to teaching in a school? I'm assuming most of the school jobs will be filled by November, that's why I'm asking. Our TESOL school (Global TESOL College) has said it's easy to find jobs, but they don't want to deter anyone from taking their course either, so I figured you folks may have a more realistic view of the situation in Spain (likely Barcelona).
And, is there anything else my wife and I should be wary about?
Thanks for your help.

You've got a couple of obstacles to overcome, I think. Of course, the non-EU issue is probably the biggest. That'll affect your legality and has implications for things like health care. Since you likely won't be able to get legal working papers, your income may be variable - you're not probably going to be working on actual contracts. I think you can get pretty good travel insurance thru CAA - you might check on that if you haven't already.
Further, Global TESOL doesn't include supervised teaching practice, and that makes some difference in terms of qualifications when doing your job search. Unless you have a teaching background in another field, this could be a minus.
Basically, if you're going for fun and you can subsidise yourselves at least to some extent, you might be able to make it work.
Good luck in any case |
