I know that I should leave some stuff at home, but how much of my own clothes, persaonal belongines do I bring? such as toiletry, CD's, DVD's, VHS? Will my VHS work? my DVD's should work?. And clothes, do I leave my winter stuff behind?

Sorry I did answer this on Friday, but someone seems to have deleted i?

Let's try again!

Okay, it depends on how you want to bring you belongings over. Do you mean shipping them over or bringing them in by hand (i.e. in your suitcase) if it's the former, yes there will (generally) be hidden costs (tax etc.) if the latter you should be fine!

Yes, unless you plan on teaching up north (where it can get a bit chilly) you should leave you winter clothes at home.

I'm not sure about the VHS recorder as Americans use NSTC and Thailand uses PAL. To be honest tapes aren't very popular here, most people use VCD's and DVD's nowadays! I've got a couple of video players that I bought here and they only cost 4-5,000 Baht!

I hope this helps?

Buddhist lifestyle attaches little importance to objects, especially owned ones. The less you have the more free you are, to learn, to move, to think. The first time I went there I threw away more stuff than I brought back.

Thai lifestyle, on the other hand, is a bit different.

I reccomend you bring 1000 extra USD, a good pair of shoes if your feet are large, and a laptop if you already own one and if it can play DVDs. With a little poking around in very obvious places (the answer to "where do I buy..." is almost always MBK or Chatuchak) you'll have something to fill your needs. Printed up resumes, scans of diplomas and other documents (especially a mugshot of you in white shirt and tie, smiling) on a CD, a few long sleeved white shirts and two really nice silk ties will help you hit the ground running -- but you can find or make all of that here as well.

Bring a few of your older DVDs. Anything new is available here for 150B a DVD. Good music, however, comes at a premium and I'd concentrate on your non-mainstream CDs for that little CD binder you'll bring.

Thailand runs 220V, any of your equipment will not work here without a voltage adapter (other than laptops, which always have voltage adapters built in these days).

When I first came I lasted two months on about 800 USD, including rental deposit. Not everyone could do that.
