I am arriving in Taichung next week without a job. Could anyone recommend a good youth hostel or cheap hotel where I could set up a month or so stay while finding work? I am looking for a place with a good locale and hopefully my own small room for cheap.
Also, could anyone please recommend schools in Taichung that are reputable so I can arrange interviews beforehand?

Thanks!

ooo, Taichung. Try to arrive inbetween earthquakes. Go to the canal district where all the foreigners hang out and chat with everyone there. It's a good way to find out where people are staying.

Please be careful research indicates that Taichung has the fastest growing crime rate on the island.

When I first got here, I stayed at the Fuh Chun Hotel. It's right by the train station downtown. It's a good place, but the price (I think it was 600/night) would be pretty steep if you're planning to stay there for a month. You get your own room with a TV and an attached bathroom. Their address: 1 Chung Shan rd...phone: 04-22283181.
There is a hostel listed in the LP book, but I tried their number and couldn't track them down. As far as the crime in Taichung, I've never felt even remotely unsafe here. Good luck and welcome.

I suggest the Taichung Hostel CSF, on Mei-Tsun street. It's cheap and luxurious. Well, relatively luxurious.

Yes, and the other night I arrived home safely after driving drunk. Therefore driving drunk must be safe....

There's plenty of crime in Taichung, but it usually doesn't affect foreigners too much. Especially English teachers on relatively short stays.

And pay no attention to Aristotle.

Thanks to you all! I've been at the Fuh Chun for a bit and am now feeling settled enough to find a cheaper place until I find an apartment.

Great advice from all!
