I'm planning to begin my first esl adventure early in 2005 in south eastern asia and have a quick question. I am a qualified musician and am wondering first of all the possibilities and second if there is any money to be made in performing at venues or even busking.
I would love to hear from anyone who has done a similar thing in the past or knows of anyone who has.

Also, which countries if any have restrictions on multiple forms of income?

Word.

I know a few folks in Beijing that perform every so often in the sanlitun bars. It does not pay a lot but they enjoy doing it. They can play whatever they wish but most of the time, they stick to the classics and some oldies.

I wouldn't be surprised if they allowed you to play - but strictly non-remunerative!
Most bands in hotel lobbies or bars in China are Filippino bands.
I was just recently in Indonesia, and noticed that most hotels and entertainment venues employ Indonesian musicians who mimick western rock and pop stars. There also is an Elvis PResly fan club in Manila that attracts EP imitators.

Maybe in China you can earn your dinner, a couple of beers an evening and a bed for the night; try Shekou's bar strip (opposite Hong Kong and Macau, in the Shenzhen S.E.Z.); you might also be lucky in Guangzhou, but I doubt you will have much luck anywhere else except in Shanghai and Peking/Tianjin.

I remembered the name of the place where a few friends played:

the Nashville Bar in Beijing. It's located on the south side of San Li Tun (bar street)
