I'm an american, and to be frank, I'm a bit scared of american children. Am I Xenophobic against my own nation? Well, yes, in terms of social respect between teacher and student and elder and younger.
Honestly, I just want to live in Thailand. I have always respected the teaching profession, but teachers in my society are not appreciated financially or socially. If I were to imagine myself in front of a bunch of rowdy teen-agers here i'd probably wanna go ballistic on them.
However I know Thai education is much more honorable. I would love to be in a position of direction for young minds in Thailand. I am sure they would respect me as I would them.
But should I pursue a career as teacher of a foreign language?
I have been even considering volunteering on the burmese or cambodian border. Am I crazy? Yes, I would do anything i can to benefit Thai culture and contribute to buddhist society. If teaching english with no previous qualifications is what they need then I'm more than happy to live like they do and expect nothing but equanimity. |
