Where is the best bookshop? |
In my humble opinion, this would have to be 'Swindon Book Company', 13-15 Lock Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon (2366 8001). Tsim Sha Tsui MTR (exit C1). This outlet have many stores in HK, but this one is on two floors.
Just in case, here is the Chinese name and address:
辰衝圖書公司 樂道13-15號
Also, if you are over on the HK side, try:
Hong Kong Book Centre
LG/F, 25 Des Voeux Road, Central, HK Island (2522 7064). Central MTR (exit B). |

Bookshops - Swindon as mentioned is good, if a bit pricy. You can also act out your favourite scenes from the Peter Greenaway movie while you're there.
Football boots - There's a street full of sports shops in Mongkok, or pretty much any shopping mall for a chain sports shop.
I-pod/kowloon - well Kowloon's a big place so difficult to say, but if you mean the tourist rip-off shops in Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui then yes, avoid those. Anywhere else should be fine. For a branded product like an I-pod you probably might as well go to a major chain store like Fortress or Broadway. Alternatively try the computer centres (Golden Arcade Sham Shui Po, Wanchai Computer centre by Wan Chai MTR or the one by the Star Ferry in Tsim Sha Tsui.) Personally, I'd just get a no name one for a quarter of the price in the computer centre, (or you local computer shop in China) it's just a bit of memory and a simple interface at the end of the day. |

why don't you just order one from www.apple.com? it's cheaper compared to what you found. $249 US for one, not including shipping...not sure how much that is. That way it comes with the guarantee, etc. etc. Although....if you find it cheap in HK please let me know! Can't wait till they come out with the mini with the larger HD. <sigh> |

Hey,
The Page One in Kowloon Tong is also a good option. Also, it they don't have the book there they will check the inventory at all their other stores in Hong Kong and you can either have it delivered to that store or you can go to the store itself and they will hold it for a few days for you. I've run down a few pretty obscure titles this way. And for the love of god please don't even think about going to any of those camera/electronic shops in TST to buy ipods. There is an official Apple store on Wellington in central with all the latest accessories as well. To be honest, the full on ipods with 20, 30 or 40 gigs cost only a bit more. I got my 30 gig for a little over $3000 and that was over a year ago. |

You can stay at Caritas Lodge, 134 Boundary Street, Mongkok, (Tel. 2339 3777) - which is good - for $5,000 for a month. It is a ten minute walk from Prince Edward MTR station. It is quite a well-to-do area and is more Kowloon Tong than Mong Kok.
As regards the West Africans at the 7-Elevens, that is simply where they chill/conduct their business, etc. |

Slim,
I also take size 48 which are impossible to find in Mongkok. You will find large sizes at Stanley market, I picked up some trainers there before the summer holiday. |

Ah, sorry, didn't notice the freakishly large foot size, yes you'll need to go to a gweilo hangout rather than MK for large shoes.
Cost of beer in bar $30, cost of beer in 7-11 $5. |

Bookshops:
SWINDON's has - or had? - a branch in OCEAN TERMINAL, next to the STAR FERRY PIER; it used to be on 3rd level but is rumoured to have moved house to the second floor.
It has a wide range of books including on history, linguistics, many novels, and best of all: it has a bargain corner (novels from $ 10 upwards that normally cost 5 times as much).
PAGE ONE specialises in arts books/reproductions, calendars etc.
I strongly recommend:
FLOW, second-hand bookstore, Hong Kong island;
I can't remember the street's name, but it's next to the travelator; a large collection of English books of every description, also CDs! |

Slim, it is not as impressive as the claim sounds as it is split up into lots of different escalators. But ChungKing Express is one of the best movies ever made. |

Yeah its not much to look at, but it sure beats walking up that hill.
To get to the escalator system simply get onto the walkway system in Central, head towards the IFC plaza and look left. You will see little blue signs with a picture of an escalator. Follow them and voila.
Flow is about half-way up on your left. Its very easy to miss, but just look for a restuarant called Ivan the Kozak (I think). there is a small entrance just before the restuarant. Go up the stairs and the door is on the right.
I've found some great books here, but I do think they are a little overpriced for second hand books.
Still. Great atmosphere and lots and lots of books.
Good luck. |
