Hello!
I have enjoyed reading all of your posts! I am trying to decide if moving to Changsha and teaching at Changsha Univ. is such a good idea with the sars epidemic spreading throughout China. Any insight into the real story would be great. Throughout the US, the media has replaced the news of the war on IRAQ with sars.
Any info on Changsha would be great.
Thanks for your information!

There is no reason not to accept your university teaching job in Changsha. Hunan province has, perhaps, been spared the SARS epidemic (although I doubt this). Anyway, the situation in Guangdong, to the south of Hunan, is a lot worse!
Summers in Changsha are blisteringly hot. Hope you have an aircon there!
Universities are a good way of getting to experience China even though pay is relatively low although more than good enough to live comfortably.
I have not been to Changsha in a while, but it is not a Venice. I think your uni is on the west bank of Xiang River, beside, or even encompassing Yuelu Park. It's a nice, suburban area on the slopes of a hill. Downtown Changsha may in the past years have been spruced up, so don't expect much historic or scenic there. |
