This is what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on working holiday says about applying for the visa

The applicant
must be a citizen/national of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom currently residing in his or her country of citizenship.
must intend primarily to holiday in Japan for a specific length of time.

must be between 18 and 30 years of age (25 years in principal for the U.K. at the time of application.)

must possess a valid passport and a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase a return ticket.

must possess reasonable funds for living expenses, including medical expenses, during the period of the initial stay in Japan. For a single person, the minimum is US$2000, for a married couple, US$3000 or equivalent amount of the national currency.

must be in good health and not have a criminal record.

Note: You must have already bought and paid for your ticket before you apply. An itinerary is insufficient.

Hope this helps

I just picked up my WHV last week and have now arrived in Japan.
You need to show the visa office your plane ticket and the $2500 cdn in TC. I tried to show them a bank statement but they would only take the TCs. You could try to buy the TC and then refund them right after I suppose.

Good Luck!

Can anyone tell me why the United States is exempt from this visa type? Is there a similar visa for Americans?

Because there is no reciprocal agreement between them. Japanese without a degree can not go and work for a year in the United States as the US government wont let them, so Americans can not come here. The Working holiday visa is an agreement between governments, but the US chooses not to participate.

They are not exempt. They can join if they want to and they are not given any special privileges. They voluntarily choose not to join, from what i can make out. And no, there are not alternatives. Americans need a degree if they want to get a work visa here.

Hey P Track, I'm interested in your plans... Did you have a pre arranged job? or are you looking from within Japan? If it is the latter I'd really be interested in hearing how you go finding a job etc. as I am considering the WHV path if I am not accepted by ECC.

Thanks!

Do you have to apply for the working holiday visa from Canada?

How long does it take?
